A Clinical Study of Carcinoma of the Colon and Rectum

Abstract
This report is a retrospective clinical review and analysis of 152 cases of colorectal cancer that received surgical treatment at the Department of Surgery, Daegu Hyosung Catholic University Hospital, from Jan. 1991 to Dec. 1995.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The peak age incidence was fifth to sixth decade, and male to female ratio was 1:1.53.
2) The most frequent site of tumor was the rectum(44.7%).
3) Abdominal pain was the most common symptom in symptom in colon cancer. Bowel habit change and bloody stool were the most common symptoms in patients with rectal cancer.
4) The duration from onset of symptoms to admission was 48.7% of patients within 3 months, 80.3% within 1 year.
5) The diagnostic procedures consisted of digital examination, endoscopy(proctoscop9y. sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy), barium erema, abdominal CT.
In some cases, explo-lapartomy was done.
6) Positive rate of postoperative CEA level was reduced, about 294%, compared to positive rate of preoperative CEA level within 4 weeks after curative resection.
7) Right hemicolectomy(35.5%) was performed most commonly, followed by Mile's operation(25%).
The overall radical resectability was 94.7%.
8) The stage of tumors were Astler Collor Modification of Dukes' Classification, A in 10. 5%, B1 in 21.0%, B2 in 10.5%, C1 in 22.4%, C2 in 22.4%, D in 13.2%.
9) The 3 year survival rate was as follows: Dukes' A 83.7%, B1 84.6%, B2 71.4%, C1 53.3%, C2 30.8%, D 16.7% and, the overall 3 year survival rate was 58.6%.
10) The most common histopathologic type was adenocarcinoma in 94.8% of all cases among them, well differentiated type was found in 50%.
11) The most common site of distant metastasis was the liver(9.2%), the second was peritoneal seeding(7.9%).
12) The postoperative complications were developed in 47% of total cases and the most common complication was wound infection(14.5%).
